The Khan's Vengeance on the Khatoon
From E6.38, The Khan’s Vengeance for Bahram. It illustrates E6.38.7–16:
- E6.38.7The Khan sought out the author of the crime,And traced the hand that struck at such a time.
- E6.38.8Kulun had in Turan two children, bredAmong close kin who shared their roof and bread.
- E6.38.9When truth was known, he burned the dwelling down,With all its quarter in that stricken town.
- E6.38.10He flung the children in the leaping flame,And gave their goods to plunder, spoil, and shame.
- E6.38.11He knew that Kharrad’s schemes had shaped it all,That guile and wrong had brought about this fall.
- E6.38.12He sent swift dromedaries through the land,But Kharrad did not fall into his hand.
- E6.38.13He cried, “How did that dog escape and flee,Who kindled such a raging fire for me?”
- E6.38.14The Khatoon next he seized; from private placeHe dragged her by the hair in grim disgrace.
- E6.38.15He seized her wealth and would not heed her pain,Nor let her grief awaken mercy’s reign.
- E6.38.16The Khan and court put on the mournful blue,And draped the realm in sorrow’s darkling hue.
