The Warden Lays Waste to Rey
From E6.49, A Cruel Warden Is Sent to Rey. It illustrates E6.49.30–39:
- E6.49.30He left the court, renowned for evil ways,And came to Rey to darken all its days.
- E6.49.31Arriving there, he cast off fear of God,And made oppression blossom from his rod.
- E6.49.32He ripped all roof-spouts down in cruel spite,That rains might rot their mudbrick walls by night;
- E6.49.33He ordered every household cat be slain,That vermin might devour the stored-up grain.
- E6.49.34Wherever he went, a herald walked before,With threats of fire at every dwelling door.
- E6.49.35“If cat or gutter still remains,” he said,“Your house shall burn, and stones shall strike your head.”
- E6.49.36He sought out even one small coin of gain,And plunged its hapless owner into pain.
- E6.49.37Through fear they left their homes and turned awayFrom all the settled land they loved in Rey.
- E6.49.38When rain fell, not a gutter could be found;No watchman kept the city safe and sound.
- E6.49.39Rey lay destroyed beneath that tyrant’s hand;The sun beat down upon that ruined land.
