Khanagi Bows Before Khosrow
From E6.53, Caesar Seeks the Cross of Christ. It illustrates E6.53.18–28:
- E6.53.18The conquering Shah received this new report:Now Caesar’s envoy neared the royal court.
- E6.53.19He bade brave Farrokh, lord of Nimruz, ride,A loyal frontier chief of noble pride.
- E6.53.20A warrior, luster of the Shah’s array,He mounted with the chosen men that day.
- E6.53.21With him went horsemen wearing golden helms,The shining chosen of Iran’s broad realms.
- E6.53.22When Khanagi beheld that gleaming file,He came before them in a stranger’s style.
- E6.53.23They reached the Shah, the palace, and the hall; The envoy saw the splendor of it all.
- E6.53.24They saw the Shah’s fair face, his splendid throne,And bowed their heads to earth, their homage shown.
- E6.53.25Khanagi, with his face upon the dust,Praised Khosrow as the lord of right and trust.
- E6.53.26“O lord of justice, holy king,” he cried,“May conquering God forever be your guide.
- E6.53.27May you be Shah and generous every hour;May Fortune guard your crown and royal power.”
- E6.53.28The chiefs arose and made a place nearby,That he might speak beneath the monarch’s eye.
