Bahram Chubin's Sister Pleads with Him
From E6.6, Gurdiyeh’s Counsel and Khosrow’s Purpose. It illustrates E6.6.12–23 (to E6.6.26):
- E6.6.12His sister heard of his return that day,And cast her splendid crown and pomp away.
- E6.6.13An aide brought forth her veil; with wounded heart,She ran to meet him, shaken in each part.
- E6.6.14“O warlike chief,” she said, “now plainly say:How fared your meeting with the Shah today?
- E6.6.15If in his youth he burns too hot and fast,Relax no effort till you make peace last.”
- E6.6.16Brave Bahram answered, “He has no true claimTo stand among the kings or bear their name.
- E6.6.17He is no sage, no Pahlevan of might,Nor generous, nor fearsome, nor yet bright.
- E6.6.18In kings, true merit counts for more than birth;A king must have those gifts that prove his worth.”
- E6.6.19His sister said, “O shrewd, ambitious chief,My words will stir your anger, not belief.
- E6.6.20Recall the sage of Balkh, who wisely said:‘The truth tastes bitter when our faults are read.’
- E6.6.21Do not destroy your country. You possessYour share of earth; do not pursue excess.
- E6.6.22A wise man said: ‘An ass once tried to donAn ox’s horns; and both his ears were gone.’
- E6.6.23Do not invite the world to cast you down;No ancestor of yours has worn the crown.
