Shirin Weeps on the Rooftop
From E7.2, Khosrow’s Love for Shirin. It illustrates E7.2.30–41 (to E7.2.45):
- E7.2.30When Shirin heard, “The mighty Shah is near,Before his army, coming toward us here,”
- E7.2.31She put a yellow musk-sweet vestment on,And made her face like blooms at early dawn.
- E7.2.32She wore a Roman robe of crimson thread,On cloth of gold, with jeweled patterns spread.
- E7.2.33Upon her head she set a royal crown,With Pahlevan-bright jewels blazing down.
- E7.2.34She left the pleasant hall and climbed the roof,Her heart from every happiness aloof.
- E7.2.35She waited there until the Shah drew near,Then tears ran down the face he once held dear.
- E7.2.36At sight of him she rose to all her height,And spoke of former sweetness, love, and light.
- E7.2.37Her ailing eyes washed cheeks like flowers in rain; The flowers were sound, the eyes were sick with pain.
- E7.2.38All tears and beauty, she began her tale;In Pahlavi she voiced her love’s travail:
- E7.2.39“O mighty lion, leader in the fight,Great conqueror, the pride of warriors’ might,
- E7.2.40Where is that love, that flood of tears you bore,Which seeing Shirin healed in days before?
- E7.2.41Where are those days that into night would creep,With smiling lips, while heart and eyes would weep?
