Barbad Bows Before Khosrow
From E7.6, The Minstrels Sarkash and Barbad. It illustrates E7.6.59–66:
- E7.6.59When Barbad heard the monarch’s gracious call,His fear dissolved; he chose to answer all.
- E7.6.60He climbed down from the cypress, glad of heart,And came before the king who praised his art.
- E7.6.61He placed his face upon the dust, bowed low;The king said, “Speak! Who are you? Let me know.”
- E7.6.62He answered, “Shah, I am your slave, and liveOnly by what your voice and throne can give.”
- E7.6.63He told the king his story from the start,And all that he had borne in flesh and heart.
- E7.6.64The king rejoiced to see him, as the roseRejoices when the springtime wind first blows.
- E7.6.65He turned to Sarkash: “You have earned disgrace;Beside his sweetness, gall is in your place.
- E7.6.66Why did you bar his entrance to my hall,And grudge his music to us, one and all?”
