Ardeshir Enthroned at Seven
From E9.1, Ardeshir, Son of Shiruyeh, Takes the Throne. It illustrates E9.1.1–11:
- E9.1.1Now I must tell of young Ardeshir’s reign,And once more make the tale of kingship plain.
- E9.1.2At seven years the child assumed the throne; Before him Iran’s gathered grandees shone.
- E9.1.3The famed old chiefs would hear the Shah’s intent,And learn what rule his new-made kingship meant.
- E9.1.4Then young Ardeshir spoke before the crowd:“Well-tested warriors, valiant and proud,
- E9.1.5Whoever sits upon the royal throneMust worship God and make skilled speech his own.
- E9.1.6We will pursue the former Shahs’ high way,Their farr and Faith, their justice day by day.
- E9.1.7May we remember God, the Source of good,And rule with justice as a monarch should.
- E9.1.8I will raise those who serve and cast down lowOppressors, making guilty lifeblood flow.
- E9.1.9Pirooz Khosrow shall rule as guide and stay,To steer our troops and council day by day.
- E9.1.10With such a Pahlevan, let Iran cheer,And keep your hearts and spirits free of fear.”
- E9.1.11His words brought many listeners repose;Contentment in their quiet hearts arose.
