From E9.3, The Reign of Guraz, Also Called Farayin. It illustrates E9.3.33–44 (to E9.3.49):
- E9.3.33The people cursed him; all desired his death,And met in secret, speaking under their breath.
- E9.3.34Ormozd Shahran Guraz, a horseman bold,From Istakhr’s city, famed in deeds of old,
- E9.3.35The glory of the chieftains, spoke one nightIn secret to the men of Iran’s might:
- E9.3.36“O chiefs, Farayin’s tyranny grows severe; He scorns Iran’s great lords and feels no fear.
- E9.3.37Why have your hearts grown narrow, courage small?Through him all eyes must weep, all hearts turn gall.
- E9.3.38Is no physician to be found for pain?Must this disease of kingship still remain?
- E9.3.39No Kayanian, nor of Sasan’s race,Why serve him, girded, to your own disgrace?
- E9.3.40Either your hearts have fled out of your breasts,Or courage fails you in the hour that tests.”
- E9.3.41The troops replied, “Since none of worth was left,The throne of fitting rulers stood bereft.
- E9.3.42None thinks to vie with him for royal fame,Or turn against this man of tainted name.
- E9.3.43Tell us from all the stores of lore you knowHow we may bring this hot-brained Shah down low.
- E9.3.44How shall Iran be freed from such a one,Whose thought and word and deed no good have done?
