Rostam on Afrasiab's Throne
From B10.11, Rostam Rules Turan for Seven Years. It illustrates B10.11.3–12:
- B10.11.3Then Rostam took Afrasiab’s royal throne,And made the conquered seat at last his own.
- B10.11.4Afrasiab’s fortune withered and declined,While Rostam left the former reign behind.
- B10.11.5Then Rostam spoke, his words like tempered steel:“A man of worth must bring his foe to heel.
- B10.11.6If hostile foes attack, then strike them dead;Or count it well if from the field they fled.”
- B10.11.7He searched the palace for its hidden gold; The people brought out wealth from every hold:
- B10.11.8Young slaves of beauty, horses strong and swift,Rich gems and crowns and robes in splendid gift,
- B10.11.9Brocades, carved ivory thrones, and treasure vast,With hoards from Gang laid open at the last.
- B10.11.10Dinars and diba lay in ordered store,With bargostvan and trappings by the score.
- B10.11.11The soldiers too were laden down with spoils,With armlets, crowns, and headgear from their toils.
- B10.11.12To Tus he gave the ivory throne and steed,A torque, and Chakh to govern as decreed,
