Behzad Knows Siavash's Saddle
From B10.19, Kay Khosrow Wins Behzad. It illustrates B10.19.4–14:
- B10.19.4Prince Khosrow hastened toward the shining spring,Intent upon the task that hope might bring.
- B10.19.5He showed Behzad the saddle, bridle dark,In hope his purpose now would hit its mark.
- B10.19.6The steed beheld the king and sighed from deep,Then stood stock-still beside the water’s sweep.
- B10.19.7He saw Siavash’s pard-skin saddle-seat,Long stirrups and the quiver at its feet.
- B10.19.8Behzad stood rooted by the flowing tide,And from the watering-place he would not stride.
- B10.19.9Prince Khosrow saw him calm and hurried near,And bore the saddle forward without fear.
- B10.19.10Brave Shabrang stood motionless in his place,And opened wide his eyes upon that face.
- B10.19.11Then Khosrow wept, and faithful Giv wept too,As though fierce fire were roasting both the two.
- B10.19.12Their tears poured down; their tongues in anger cried,And curses fell on Afrasiab’s pride.
- B10.19.13Khosrow stroked eyes and face with tender care,His chest and mane, and smoothed his flowing hair.
- B10.19.14He bridled him and saddled him, the heirRemembering his father in despair.
