Bahman Castle Burns the Army of Tus
From B10.34, Bahman Castle Defies Tus and Fariborz. It illustrates B10.34.8–19:
- B10.34.8Then Tus advanced beneath Kaviani’s sign,With forty golden-shod chiefs kept in line.
- B10.34.9Fariborz held the center, proud and fine,While Tus led elephants, a sight divine.
- B10.34.10When they approached the fortress on the height,The earth breathed fire and burned with searing light.
- B10.34.11The spearheads glowed beneath the burning air,And warriors burned, all consumed by fire’s glare.
- B10.34.12The world was fire; no shelter could be found,And Ahriman’s dark snare was all around.
- B10.34.13Its battlements rose high to heaven’s vault; No warrior could wage a fair assault.
- B10.34.14Then Tus declared: “When warriors meet a foe,They cast their foeman’s head to dust below.
- B10.34.15With sword and bow, with arrow and kamand,They seek to strike the foe who makes his stand.
- B10.34.16But round this fortress not one path was shown; If any lay there, none to us was known.
- B10.34.17Our bodies boil beneath the jowshan’s heat,And mounts burn fiercely underneath our feet.
- B10.34.18Think well upon it: if you fail this day,No other man will ever force a way.”
- B10.34.19Seven days long they circled round that place,Yet nowhere could they find its gate or trace.
