Tus Lays Down the Banner and Golden Shoes
From B10.36, Kay Khosrow’s Triumphant Return. It illustrates B10.36.8–17:
- B10.36.8Then Tus approached beneath the Kaviani sign,With koust and golden shoes in ordered line.
- B10.36.9He bowed to earth and laid them at his feet,Then spoke in words both measured and discreet:
- B10.36.10“Now judge who best deserves these signs of state:The koust, gold shoes, and standard blessed by fate.
- B10.36.11Look through the army; judge the worthiest here,And choose the Pahlevan who has no peer.
- B10.36.12For one who erred, life is a treasure still; To live is wealth enough beneath your will.”
- B10.36.13Tus begged forgiveness for the words he said,And cast his futile counsel from his head.
- B10.36.14Then Khosrow laughed, and Tus he warmly greeted,And had him on a throne of honor seated.
- B10.36.15“For Kaviani standard, golden shoes,And Pahlevani, none but you I choose.
- B10.36.16Your farr and station fit this office true;No grievance in my heart remains for you.
- B10.36.17You need not now apologize,” said he;“You did not wish a foreign Shah to be.”
