Rostam Alone in the Press of Chin
From B14.11, Rostam Puts Shangul to Flight. It illustrates B14.11.22–30:
- B14.11.22He bade the troops together take the field,Like moving mountains, ranks that would not yield.
- B14.11.23“Surround him; close upon him, every side,And take his life,” the Khan of Chin then cried.
- B14.11.24That lion drew his sword with furious might,And shattered Chin’s left wing amid the fight.
- B14.11.25Each stroke he dealt left bodies on the ground,Their heads struck off and scattered all around.
- B14.11.26No mountain could withstand his strength that day;No elephant could hold his wrath at bay.
- B14.11.27The warriors crowded round the mighty one,So thick they darkened all the shining sun.
- B14.11.28With spears and swords and shafts and gorz they cast,Against the chief who stood alone and fast.
- B14.11.29He seemed to stand where thick-grown reeds were spread; The realm became one winepress running red.
- B14.11.30At every blow he sliced through ten stout spears,And roared like angry lions in men’s ears.
