Sohrab Presses the Horses Down
From B8.6, Sohrab Chooses His Charger. It illustrates B8.6.7–13:
- B8.6.7From mountain, hill, and plain the herdsmen came,And drove all horse herds in like smoke and flame.
- B8.6.8They filled the city, brought from every side,That Sohrab choose a steed for war to ride.
- B8.6.9When one appeared thick-necked and strong of frame,Sohrab stepped forth to put its strength to shame.
- B8.6.10He cast the leather kamand round its neck,Then set his hand its gathered strength to check.
- B8.6.11He pressed its back until its belly layUpon the earth; so did its strength give way.
- B8.6.12Thus one by one he tried the strongest breed,And many broke beneath his mighty deed.
- B8.6.13None proved a steed his battle weight could take; And grief began within the youth to wake.
