Sohrab Spares the Fallen Hajir
From B8.8, Sohrab Comes to the White Fortress. It illustrates B8.8.18–23:
- B8.8.18Then Sohrab swung the butt-end of his spear,And hoisted Hajir from the saddle clear.
- B8.8.19He hurled him down, a mountain-mass of stone,And dread within the fallen chief had grown.
- B8.8.20Dazed both in heart and mind, the warrior lay,His strength and spirit scattered by the fray.
- B8.8.21Sohrab dismounted, sat on him, and drewHis sword to cut the fallen warrior through.
- B8.8.22But Hajir rolled to right beneath the blade,And begged for quarter, shaken and afraid.
- B8.8.23Sohrab granted quarter, pleased to let him live,Then counsel long and stern began to give.
