The Sorceress Dragged before Kavus
From B9.12, Kavus Questions the Matter of the Infants. It illustrates B9.12.16–25:
- B9.12.16He sent his guards through every street to traceThe sorceress within her hiding-place.
- B9.12.17They searched through every quarter of the town,Until at last her hidden trace was found.
- B9.12.18They found her close at hand; experienced menWent swiftly forth and seized the woman then.
- B9.12.19They dragged her forth in shame before the throne,While all who watched stood silent as a stone.
- B9.12.20He questioned her with patience, calm, and care,And promised grace if she the truth laid bare.
- B9.12.21For many days he urged her to confess,Yet all his urging met with no success.
- B9.12.22He said: “Use every stratagem you know;Compel the hidden truth at last to show.
- B9.12.23If still she will not speak and keeps her lie,Then saw her through the middle; let her die.”
- B9.12.24They threatened sword and gallows, pit and pain,But all their threats and terror proved in vain.
- B9.12.25She said: “I am not guilty of this deed; What more have I to answer or to plead?”
