Rostam Trains the Young Siavash
From B9.3, The Birth of Siavash. It illustrates B9.3.16–24:
- B9.3.16He bore him to Zabulistan, and madeA dwelling for him in a garden’s shade.
- B9.3.17He taught him horsemanship, the saddle’s skill,To bend the bow and loose the shaft at will.
- B9.3.18The kamand, rein, and stirrup he explained,Till in their every use the prince was trained.
- B9.3.19He taught him justice, wrong, the crown and throne,And speech by which a ruler’s mind is known.
- B9.3.20To feast with honor, command men in fight,And lead the army with a ruler’s might.
- B9.3.21With hawk and falcon he pursued the prey,While cheetahs coursed across the open way.
- B9.3.22He taught him every art from first to last; His toil bore fruit when all the work was past.
- B9.3.23So grew Siavash in strength and noble grace,A peerless prince in bearing, form, and face.
- B9.3.24As time went by, his strength outgrew all check; He cast his kamand toward the lion’s neck.
