Afrasiab Weighs Piran's Plea in Tears
From B9.36, Piran Counsels Afrasiab. It illustrates B9.36.16–22:
- B9.36.16Her name is Farangis; if I may standAs worthy of her, grant to me her hand.’”
- B9.36.17Afrasiab fell silent and dismayed,And slow tears gathered as the plea he weighed.
- B9.36.18He said: “I raised this matter once with you,Yet you rejected what I held as true.
- B9.36.19A sage once warned me, lofty in his thought:‘A male lion cub is dearly taught.
- B9.36.20You nurse and train him, make his body strong,And labor for his growth the whole year long.
- B9.36.21Your labor ends when lion-strength is shown,Yet none of all its fruit becomes your own.
- B9.36.22His first fierce stroke, when fighting strength has spread,Will seize the man who reared him by the head.’
