Gudarz Consoles the Grieving Prince
From B9.5, The Death of the Mother of Siavash. It illustrates B9.5.7–15:
- B9.5.7When nobles heard the news, they hastened near,To stand beside the prince they held so dear.
- B9.5.8Tus, Giv, Fariborz, Gudarz all came,With princes, chiefs, and champions of name.
- B9.5.9But when he saw them, grief came breaking through;A wind of pain rose from his heart and grew.
- B9.5.10He wept anew and opened sorrow’s door,And from his heart let hidden anguish pour.
- B9.5.11Then Gudarz saw the noble cypress pressedBy grief, and darkness settled in his breast.
- B9.5.12Then Gudarz spoke: “O prince, heed my advice:Do not begin this mourning for her twice.
- B9.5.13All born of mothers yield their mortal breath;None escapes Ajal’s hand, appointed death.
- B9.5.14Your mother now has passed from mortal care; Her soul is in Minu; do not despair.”
- B9.5.15With a hundred pleas, with counsel, charm, and art,They set once more in place the prince’s heart.
