Sudabeh Rises to Embrace Siavash
From B9.7, Siavash Visits Sudabeh. It illustrates B9.7.17–28:
- B9.7.17And as he passed within, there met his eyeA throne of beaten gold that blazed on high.
- B9.7.18With turquoise set in patterns finely made,And royal cloth in layered splendor laid.
- B9.7.19There sat Sudabeh, splendid to behold,A heaven rich with fragrance, hue, and gold.
- B9.7.20Like Yemen’s Canopus her beauty shone,Her curling locks in scented folds were thrown.
- B9.7.21A crown rose high above her radiant head,Her musk-dark kamand to her feet was spread.
- B9.7.22A servant stood and held her golden shoes,Head bowed, to wait whatever she might choose.
- B9.7.23And when the prince drew near, she left her seat,And came alone, with graceful steps, to meet.
- B9.7.24She bowed to him, then took him in embrace,And held him long before her moon-bright face.
- B9.7.25She kissed his eyes and face with lingering sight,And could not tire of gazing on that light.
- B9.7.26She said: “A hundred thanks to Yazdan now I raise;By day, through three night watches, still I praise.
- B9.7.27No man has ever had a son your peer;No Shah possessed such kin in any year.”
- B9.7.28But Siavash perceived what lay concealed,And knew what kind of love her words revealed.
