Kavus Laughs at His Son's Warning
From B9.7, Siavash Visits Sudabeh. It illustrates B9.7.54–65 (to B9.7.73):
- B9.7.54When morning came, Siavash returned to bringHis blessing to the throne and to the king.
- B9.7.55The Shah dismissed the rest, and when they went,He spoke in private, earnest in intent:
- B9.7.56“One hidden longing stirs within my heart,For which I ask the World-Creator’s part:
- B9.7.57Let your own name remain through ages known,And from your seed may rise a royal throne.
- B9.7.58As I take joy to look upon your face,So may your son bring you the selfsame grace.
- B9.7.59The stars have shown me what the years will bring:That from your line shall rise a mighty king.
- B9.7.60The star-counting Mobadan read your sign; They saw a future sovereign in your line.
- B9.7.61Look first where Kay Pashin’s young daughters dwell;Among the great, choose one who suits you well.
- B9.7.62Kay Arash too has daughters of high birth; If asked, his house would join with yours in worth.”
- B9.7.63He answered: “I obey the Shah’s decree; His will alone is law enough for me.
- B9.7.64Whomever you select shall be my bride;Your servant follows where his Shah shall guide.
- B9.7.65But do not let Sudabeh hear this choice; She twists its meaning with another voice.
