Sudabeh Displays the Maidens
From B9.8, Siavash Visits the Bower Again. It illustrates B9.8.10–19:
- B9.8.10Then Siavash came where all the women met,And saw her court, her crown with jewels set.
- B9.8.11She left her throne and stepped before his gaze,Her jeweled face and hair alike ablaze.
- B9.8.12Siavash sat upon the golden seat; She stood, hands folded, serving at his feet.
- B9.8.13She showed the maidens gathered in the room,Untouched like gems still sealed within their bloom.
- B9.8.14“Behold this court,” she said, “and those who stand,With golden headgear, waiting your command.
- B9.8.15Young beauties of Taraz, with modest eyes,Whom Yazdan shaped in coy and tender guise.
- B9.8.16If one among them pleases you the best,Then choose her now, and let your choice be blessed.”
- B9.8.17Siavash raised his eyes a little way,Yet none could turn her gaze from him away.
- B9.8.18They whispered: “Even the moon would shrink from sightBefore the brilliance of this prince’s light.”
- B9.8.19Each maiden then returned to her own throne,And weighed what fortune might become her own.
