Bijan Drawn Up from the Pit
From C2.24, Rostam Rescues Bijan from the Pit. It illustrates C2.24.34–39:
- C2.24.34Then Rostam lowered his kamand out of sight,And drew him up, his feet still fettered tight.
- C2.24.35His head was bare, his hair and nails were long,His frame made weak by hunger, pain, and wrong.
- C2.24.36His face was wan, his bloodied body worn,By rusted chains and iron shackles torn.
- C2.24.37When Rostam saw him cloaked in iron weight,He cried aloud against that bitter fate.
- C2.24.38He stretched his hands and broke each iron link,And loosed the ankle-ring there at the brink.
- C2.24.39Together they returned where Rostam stayed,With one on either side, the youth and maid.
