Houman Taunts Gudarz
From C3.11, Houman Challenges Gudarz. It illustrates C3.11.2–13 (to C3.11.21):
- C3.11.2Still bent on vengeance against Iran’s band,He came before Gudarz and made his stand.
- C3.11.3He shouted, “Binder of the Div, give ear;Now hear the charge that Houman brings you here.
- C3.11.4I heard your counsel in the royal hall,And how you led the Shah’s men, one and all.
- C3.11.5I heard of all his gifts and your command,Your terms to Piran, chief of Turan’s land.
- C3.11.6Your envoy reached the ranks of old Piran;Your son, the warrior Giv, a Pahlevan.
- C3.11.7And afterward you swore by royal light,By sun and moon, by throne and crown in sight:
- C3.11.8‘If ever I behold Piran in strife,I shall cut short the measure of his life.’
- C3.11.9Fierce as a lion you have ranked your powers,And thirsted for the fight through waiting hours.
- C3.11.10Then why crouch back behind that mountain chain,Like timid mountain sheep that fear the plain?
- C3.11.11So does the hunted quarry flee in fright,Before the lion’s overwhelming might.
- C3.11.12It seeks a narrow woodland hiding-place,And fears for life, forgetting all disgrace.
- C3.11.13Lead forth your battle-lines into the field; Why keep your men behind the heights concealed?
