Gudarz Grants Bijan the Combat
From C3.12, News of Houman Reaches Bijan. It illustrates C3.12.61–72:
- C3.12.61Gudarz laughed gladly at the youth’s reply,And seemed a noble cypress rising high.
- C3.12.62He answered, “Giv is fortunate to breedA son so brave, of such heroic seed.
- C3.12.63May I not forget that blessed hour of birth,When your pure mother brought you forth to earth.
- C3.12.64Since first you raised your hands with lion might,The leopards have sheathed their claws and fled your sight.
- C3.12.65You may meet Houman; may good fortune guideYour heart and hand when you confront his pride.
- C3.12.66In God’s great name, who guards us every hour,And by our Shah’s and heroes’ conquering power,
- C3.12.67Strive so this Ahriman, by God’s command,May meet his destined death beneath your hand.
- C3.12.68I shall tell Giv: ‘Give Bijan at his callThe armor he has asked for, helm and all.’
- C3.12.69If you shall crush this foe upon the field,Still greater honor in my eyes you will wield.
- C3.12.70Above brave Farhad and your sire you will stand,With treasure, throne, and crown, and troops in hand.”
- C3.12.71Thus spoke the grandfather; the youth stood near,Resourceful, full of plans, his judgment clear.
- C3.12.72Bijan dismounted, kissed the ground in praise,And blessed the Pahlevan for happy days.
