Arrows Rain on the Pitched Battle
From C3.24, Iran and Turan Fight a Pitched Battle. It illustrates C3.24.1–10:
- C3.24.1When morning spread its golden brocade wide,The sea of battle heaved from side to side.
- C3.24.2A war-cry rose from both assembled sides,And hoofbeats shook the plain in thunderous tides.
- C3.24.3On every side the troops in jowshans rolled,Till hills and plains were hidden, fold by fold.
- C3.24.4Both chieftains, leopard-like, drew up their might,And mustered all their powers for the fight.
- C3.24.5The arrows showered like rain from darkened cloud,And all the world was wrapped in battle’s shroud.
- C3.24.6It seemed a cloud-dark night of murk and gloom,Its rain was shafts and flashing blades of doom.
- C3.24.7The earth was iron with the horses’ tread,The warriors’ hands shone ruby-bright and red.
- C3.24.8So many headless bodies filled the field,There was no room to turn, no path to yield.
- C3.24.9No passage for the horses’ feet remained; The earth was tulip-hued where blood had stained.
- C3.24.10The air was indigo, the plain blood-red,And waves ran high across that sea of dead.
