Giv's Charger Will Not Move
From C3.25, Giv’s Horse Falters before Piran. It illustrates C3.25.6–16:
- C3.25.6Giv saw him there, and wheeled, and spurred to breachThe ring of guards that kept Piran from reach.
- C3.25.7He speared four men and hurled them to the ground,From those before Piran, his guards around.
- C3.25.8Piran, son of Viseh, strung his bow,And rained sharp arrows fiercely on his foe.
- C3.25.9Bold Giv held up his shield above his head,And charged with spear, a wolf where blood was shed.
- C3.25.10But when he sought to close with fierce Piran,And thrust his spear against the chief of Turan,
- C3.25.11His charger halted, rooted to the ground; It would not move from where it now was found.
- C3.25.12Enraged, he lashed his swift steed with the whip,And anger loosed the words upon his lip.
- C3.25.13He seethed, then let his bitter curses flyAgainst the evil Div beneath the sky.
- C3.25.14Then with his wolf-skin shield above his head,He dropped his spear and took his bow instead.
- C3.25.15He drew and loosed to pin Piran’s strong handAgainst the shield he raised to make his stand.
- C3.25.16Four shafts he shot against Piran’s proud crown; They failed to harm that chief of dread renown.
