From C3.44, Bijan Follows Gostaham. It illustrates C3.44.1–8:
- C3.44.1Bijan put on his jowshan, armed for strife,Then saddled Shabrang, swift and full of life.
- C3.44.2News reached brave Giv that Bijan meant to rideAgainst Farshidvard, armed in battle’s pride.
- C3.44.3Giv sprang upon his Arab steed and brokeAcross his path, as swiftly borne as smoke.
- C3.44.4He seized his bridle, drew him to the side,And spoke in grief, to hold him back, and cried:
- C3.44.5“How often have I warned you, yet in vain! You give my heart no moment free from pain.
- C3.44.6Where would you hasten now? Why grieve me so?Must every deed increase the pain I know?
- C3.44.7What must I do? For I am old and gray; Why must you pain my heart in every way?
- C3.44.8I have no other child to make me glad;I know no happiness when you are sad.
