Hishvi Lays the Teeth Before Caesar
From C5.13, Goshtasb’s Prowess before Caesar. It illustrates C5.13.36–43:
- C5.13.36Within the forest fell that wolf of prey; The mountain dragon died the selfsame way.
- C5.13.37Both lost their heads beneath my sword’s decree; And Hishvi was the one who guided me.
- C5.13.38Their teeth remain within my house today; The wounds upon them prove the words I say.
- C5.13.39Ask Hishvi; he can tell you what befell; These deeds are fresh, and he remembers well.”
- C5.13.40When Hishvi came and laid the teeth in sight,He told the Caesar how Goshtasb won the fight.
- C5.13.41Then Caesar spoke in penitence and shame:“Young man, you suffered wrong; I bear the blame.
- C5.13.42Where is my dear Katayun? Tell me now.She has just cause to blame me, I avow.”
- C5.13.43At Murin and Ahran he glared in rage:“No hidden lie survives from age to age.”
