Ilyas's Envoy Tempts Farrokhzad
From C5.14, Caesar Demands Tribute from Ilyas. It illustrates C5.14.35–46 (to C5.14.49):
- C5.14.35Goshtasb led forth the Roman ranks and woundBeyond the city to the open ground.
- C5.14.36With ox-head gorz he rode beside the stream,Tall as a cypress where the waters gleam.
- C5.14.37He chose the open plain where ranks would meet,And sent dust heavenward beneath his feet.
- C5.14.38Then Ilyas saw his shoulders and his grace,His turning wrist, his gorz’s sweep and pace.
- C5.14.39He sent a horseman, smooth in speech and sly,To bait Goshtasb with praise and subtle lie.
- C5.14.40The horseman said, “O rider, famed and wise,Do not let Caesar’s favor cloud your eyes.
- C5.14.41You are the horseman on whom all depend; His spring and fame through you alone ascend.
- C5.14.42Stand clear of both these armies; turn aside. Why should your lips with angry foam be dyed?
- C5.14.43Ilyas is a lion in the fray;More swift than dust, he comes to bar your way.
- C5.14.44If you seek gifts, Ilyas has his store; Why toil for wealth when he can give you more?
- C5.14.45Choose any portion of the world you name;Within that region you shall rise to fame.
- C5.14.46I shall be both your servant and your friend,And never break my pledge until the end.”
