Zarir Before Caesar, Goshtasb Silent
From C5.17, Zarir Bears Word to Caesar. It illustrates C5.17.20–28:
- C5.17.20When he arrived within the Caesar’s court,The chamberlain saw him and gave a report.
- C5.17.21Within the palace Caesar sat in gloom,With Kalus and Goshtasb in the room.
- C5.17.22The Caesar heard and let Zarir draw near;Goshtasb’s heart grew glad to see him here.
- C5.17.23Zarir came in, a cypress, straight and tall,And sat upon a throne within the hall.
- C5.17.24He hailed the Caesar, and due praise he paid,And honored all the Romans there arrayed.
- C5.17.25Then Caesar said, “You slight Farrokhzad here,And heed no rule of courtesy or fear.”
- C5.17.26Zarir replied, “This slave at last grew tiredOf all the service that his shah required.
- C5.17.27He fled the royal court to reach your land,And now enjoys high rank at your command.”
- C5.17.28Goshtasb heard, but answered not a word,As though no thought of Iran in him stirred.
