Jamasp Bows to the Chained Prince
From C6.30, Jamasp Visits Esfandiyar. It illustrates C6.30.17–28:
- C6.30.17Esfandiyar said, “Let him enter now.”The sage came in and made a courtly bow.
- C6.30.18Before Esfandiyar he took his place,And gave Goshtasb’s full message face to face.
- C6.30.19Esfandiyar replied, “O memory brightOf wisdom, honored for your keen insight,
- C6.30.20Exalted man of fearless heart and mind,Why bow to one whom chains and irons bind?
- C6.30.21A man whose hands and feet are bound this waySeems Ahriman, no man of flesh and clay.
- C6.30.22You bring me greetings from the king of kings; What wisdom prompts you to say such things?
- C6.30.23Arjasp has sent his greeting to this land;Iranian blood now stains his murderous hand.
- C6.30.24Though guiltless, I was bound and cast away;Gurazm must be the Shah’s own son today.
- C6.30.25Let me stay bound; these irons testifyBefore Yazdan of earth and starry sky.
- C6.30.26Goshtasb wronged me through Gurazm’s evil word;Ahriman smiled at what that slander stirred.
- C6.30.27Such was the recompense my labors earned; My treasure into iron has been turned.
- C6.30.28May memory of this suffering remain,Nor let your words make my own judgment wane.”
