The Shamed Envoys Return to Arjasp
From C6.8, The Envoys Bear Goshtasb’s Answer. It illustrates C6.8.6–12:
- C6.8.6When from afar they saw the palace rise,Its sable banner dark against the skies,
- C6.8.7They left their prancing steeds in grief and fear;Their hearts were crushed, their eyes no longer clear.
- C6.8.8Afoot they came before the royal seat,In blackened robes, pale-faced in their defeat.
- C6.8.9They gave the Shah’s own letter to the king,Zarir’s reply, a sharp and bitter thing.
- C6.8.10Arjasp called in his scribes to hear the wholeOf what was written in the royal scroll.
- C6.8.11He told the scribe, “Now read it, word for word,That all the letter’s meaning may be heard.”
- C6.8.12A scribe unfolded it before that place,And read it to the king of Turkish race.
