Goshtasb's Host Marches from Balkh
From C6.9, Goshtasb Assembles His Troops. It illustrates C6.9.14–21:
- C6.9.14Next day he came with priests and nobles all,With chiefs and captains gathered at his call.
- C6.9.15He opened Jamshid’s treasure stores that day,And gave the troops their wages: two years’ pay.
- C6.9.16He gave them jowshan and supplies to bear;Tabiras, karnays thundered through the air.
- C6.9.17They loaded baggage; at the army’s headThe royal, conquering banner was outspread.
- C6.9.18He led the troops to fight Arjasp the bold,An army vaster than the mind could hold.
- C6.9.19No man could see the moon or light of day;The dust of steeds and troops hid every ray.
- C6.9.20So loud the neighs and cries rose from the throng,No ear could hear tabiras beat along.
- C6.9.21Flags thronged like reeds in spring; spears rose and stoodAbove the clouds, like trees in mountain wood.
