Esfandiyar Slanders Zal's Birth
From C8.14, Esfandiyar Insults Rostam’s Race. It illustrates C8.14.1–12 (to C8.14.18):
- C8.14.1Then Esfandiyar spoke thus to Rostam’s face:“O kindly chief, whom fame and honor grace,
- C8.14.2From Mobadan I heard this tale of old; From chiefs and wakeful sages it was told:
- C8.14.3That Zal was base, and from a Div was born; His lineage merits nothing more than scorn.
- C8.14.4They hid the child from Sahm for many a day,And deemed him born to bring the world dismay.
- C8.14.5His face and hair were white, his body dark;Sahm saw him and despaired of that strange mark.
- C8.14.6He bade them take him to the sea, away,Where birds and fish might make the child their prey.
- C8.14.7The Simorgh came, her wings spread out to fly;No noble bearing, no farr met her eye.
- C8.14.8She carried him aloft to her retreat,Where no one found the infant’s presence sweet.
- C8.14.9Though hunger gnawed, the Simorgh’s scorn was plain; She held his body worthless, in disdain.
- C8.14.10He ate the carrion scraps that she had shed;Unclothed, despised, on cast-off flesh he fed.
- C8.14.11In time the Simorgh came to love the child; And so the years passed by him in the wild.
- C8.14.12She took him to Sistan, his body bare,After he lived on carrion for his fare.
