Rostam's Last Arrow
From C9.4, The Death of Rostam. It illustrates C9.4.30–36:
- C9.4.30The matchless hero took the bow in pain,And held it out despite his wounds and strain.
- C9.4.31Shaghad, in terror of the arrows, fled,And put a tree between them, pale with dread.
- C9.4.32A plane tree stood nearby, whose ancient frameHad stood through many years before he came.
- C9.4.33Its trunk was hollow, yet its leaves still grew;It hid the wicked-minded man from view.
- C9.4.34Though wounded, Rostam raised his hand to slay;He drew the bow and loosed the shaft away.
- C9.4.35The shaft sewed tree and brother into one,And joy lit Rostam’s heart, his life near done.
- C9.4.36Shaghad cried out when struck; his pain was brief; The hero’s shaft had brought him quick relief.
