Bahram Fights the Lion with His Blade
From D10.17, Bahram’s Lion-Hunt. It illustrates D10.17.44–53:
- D10.17.44A lion, full of Gur-e-Khar, drew near,And strode before the monarch without fear.
- D10.17.45Brave Bahram said, “Although I have my bow,And skill enough to lay that monster low,
- D10.17.46I will assail this lion with my blade,So no man calls me coward or afraid.”
- D10.17.47He donned a coat of wool, soaked through, as guard,And sprang upon his charger, riding hard.
- D10.17.48When that great dragon-lion saw him near,It reared and struck its claws in rage and fear.
- D10.17.49It sought to smite the charger on the head; The warrior spurred his horse ahead instead.
- D10.17.50He struck the lion’s head; its mate took flight,And fled before the monarch’s dreadful might.
- D10.17.51He clove the lion through with one swift blade; The forest beasts beheld him, sore afraid.
- D10.17.52Another lion roared and faced his foe;His mate lay nursing little cubs below.
- D10.17.53Bahram’s sharp khanjar struck the lion’s neck,And left its severed head beside the wreck.
