The Shaft Shatters the Mark
From D10.28, Shangul’s Feast and Bahram’s Prowess. It illustrates D10.28.28–37:
- D10.28.28The king rode to the polo ground that day,His mallet in his hand, intent on play.
- D10.28.29His servants bore his bow and shafts behind; He rode awhile for sport and ease of mind.
- D10.28.30He bade Bahram mount up at his command,And take a Kayanian bow in hand.
- D10.28.31Bahram replied, “Iran’s horsemen are here,O king, and long to join your sport and cheer.
- D10.28.32They long for archery and polo’s play;Let your command permit their sport today.”
- D10.28.33Shangul replied, “The bow and arrow standThe main supports of every horseman’s hand.
- D10.28.34With limbs like yours, that neck, that powerful frame,String up your bow and vindicate your fame.”
- D10.28.35Bahram Goor strung the bow and urged his steed; He gave the gallant horse its rein for speed.
- D10.28.36He loosed his thumb; one shaft flew to the mark,And shattered it as lightning splits the dark.
- D10.28.37The sportsmen and the warriors, one and all,Called blessings down on him with joyful call.
