Khoshnavaz Digs the Hidden Trench
From D11.3.3, Khoshnavaz’s Letter to Pirooz. It illustrates D11.3.3.39–45:
- D11.3.3.39When Khoshnavaz heard this, he turned in prayer,And sought from God His shelter and His care:
- D11.3.3.40“O Judge whose judgments guard the cause of right,O Master of the dust and wind in flight,
- D11.3.3.41You know Pirooz, unjust in word and aim,Has no more prowess than Bahram could claim.
- D11.3.3.42He speaks unjustly, eager to extendHis realm by sword and make new kingdoms bend.
- D11.3.3.43Break from the earth the footing where he stands;Leave strength, wit, courage empty in his hands.”
- D11.3.3.44Around his troops he dug a trench and laidA covering across the breach he made.
- D11.3.3.45More than a kamand’s length the trench ran deep;Full twenty arash spanned its sides so steep.
