Mazdak Seizes Kisra's Hand
From D12.7, Anooshirvan Overthrows Mazdak’s Faith. It illustrates D12.7.1–12 (to D12.7.26):
- D12.7.1At dawn Mazdak went out before the king,Intent upon the claim he meant to bring.
- D12.7.2He said, “The faithful gather at the gate;Shall they come in, or must they leave and wait?”
- D12.7.3Qobad then bade the chamberlain obey,And bring Mazdak’s assembled men that day.
- D12.7.4Mazdak replied, “This house is far too small; The crowd will overflow the audience hall.
- D12.7.5Let now the Shah go out beneath the sky,And view your servants mustered standing by.”
- D12.7.6Qobad commanded that his throne be setOut in the open, where the throngs had met.
- D12.7.7Three thousand of Mazdak’s men now drew near,And thronged before the Shah with open cheer.
- D12.7.8Mazdak addressed the monarch of the earth:“O king whose wisdom stands above all worth,
- D12.7.9Know this: Kisra rejects the faith we teach;Shall such defiance stand beyond our reach?
- D12.7.10He must give written pledge before your faceTo turn from error and our faith embrace.
- D12.7.11Five things alone turn mortal men aside; No sage has ever named a sixth beside.
- D12.7.12They are envy and vengeance, anger, need; The fifth, which masters men, is grasping greed.
