Farfuriyus Flees the Field
From D13.13, Anooshirvan Defeats Caesar’s Army. It illustrates D13.13.13–21:
- D13.13.13Then foam came to his lips; he gave commandThat all the army should in order stand.
- D13.13.14So line with line confronted on the ground,And dust-choked air could find no passage round.
- D13.13.15A glorious gathering filled the battlefield,Proud chiefs and men with scimitars to wield.
- D13.13.16All loins were girded tightly for the fight; The great, the wise, the royal seed of might.
- D13.13.17Their swords were tempered in the blood of foes,And keen enough to cleave the clouds that rose.
- D13.13.18The foe had no more respite in that placeThan hunted prey when leopards spring in chase.
- D13.13.19The Roman dead lay heaped across the plain; The wounded soldiers left the fight in pain.
- D13.13.20Farfuriyus, now wounded, fled the fray;Flag shredded, tabiras upturned that day.
- D13.13.21Iranian horsemen chased them at full pace,Like leopards hunting wild sheep in the chase.
