The Brahmans Come Down to Greet Iskandar
From D5.24, Iskandar Questions the Brahmans. It illustrates D5.24.17–26:
- D5.24.17He left his legions waiting on the plain,And rode with Rum’s philosophers in train.
- D5.24.18They heard, and came to meet him on the way,Each stepping forth to greet the Shah that day.
- D5.24.19They brought him humble gifts from open field,For they had neither gold nor harvest yield.
- D5.24.20They blessed that noble monarch of the earth,And praised his lofty spirit and his worth.
- D5.24.21Iskandar saw their faces, heard their speech,And listened to the voices raised by each.
- D5.24.22They ran with bodies naked, head to toe;Their souls held knowledge, though no robes to show.
- D5.24.23With grass for clothing, seeds their only fare,They lived at ease, secure from war and care.
- D5.24.24They ate and slept on plain and mountain height,And wandered naked in the open light.
- D5.24.25Their food was fruit and seeds from mountain ground,The plants that on the slopes grew all around.
- D5.24.26The plains were full of game; the plants they soughtGave food and covering the earth had brought.
