Haftvad's Daughter Finds the Worm
From D6.12, The Story of Haftvad and the Worm. It illustrates D6.12.14–22:
- D6.12.14One day the girls together took their place,And sat with spindles at the mountain’s base.
- D6.12.15They pooled the food they brought to eat that day,And at their meal set all their tools away.
- D6.12.16Beside the path the lucky maiden foundAn apple blown down from a tree to ground.
- D6.12.17She saw it, picked it up, and held it near; Now hear the wondrous tale I tell you here.
- D6.12.18She bit the fruit, and in its flesh she spiedA worm that lay within the apple’s side.
- D6.12.19She lifted it with fingers from its place,And set it gently in her distaff case.
- D6.12.20She took the cotton, saying as she spun,“In God’s name, peerless, partnerless, and One!
- D6.12.21Today, through this small worm, you all shall seeWhat wondrous spinning fortune brings to me.”
- D6.12.22The girls grew merry, laughing in delight,And flashed their silver teeth, all clear and bright.
