Shapur Seizes the Ball Before the Shah
From D7.3, The Daughter of Ardavan Bears a Son. It illustrates D7.3.57–63:
- D7.3.57The servant did the bidding of the king,And drove the ball before the mounted ring.
- D7.3.58The boys, as swift as arrows, chased it hard,Until they neared the Shah across the yard.
- D7.3.59They halted, though they longed to join the play; But Shapur charged ahead without delay.
- D7.3.60He bore it off before the monarch’s face,Then gave it to the boys beyond that place.
- D7.3.61The Shah’s heart joyed as when an old man’s frameGrows young again and kindles into flame.
- D7.3.62The horsemen lifted Shapur from the ground,And passed him hand to hand among them round.
- D7.3.63At last the King of kings embraced the boy,And blessed the Judge of all with tears of joy.
