Mahbud's Brand among the Hunting Horses
From E1.2, Anooshirvan Avenges Mahbud. It illustrates E1.2.1–8:
- E1.2.1Much later, the Shah chose to hunt one day;His wolf-hunt steeds were mustered in array.
- E1.2.2He watched the hunting horses passing by;Among their brands, one marking caught his eye.
- E1.2.3Then on some Arab steeds Mahbud’s mark showed; The Shah’s cheeks flushed, and old affection glowed.
- E1.2.4His heart still held remembrance of that man;He burned with grief as bitter thoughts began.
- E1.2.5He wept, and pain consumed his troubled breast,Remembering Mahbud, once among the best:
- E1.2.6“How far the wicked Div led him astray,That man once wise and honored in his day!
- E1.2.7With such devotion and a heart so true,Why did his spirit choose the path to rue?
- E1.2.8Yazdan of all alone can pierce the guiseAnd know what hidden truth beneath it lies.”
