Zarvan Trembles in the Royal Tent
From E1.2, Anooshirvan Avenges Mahbud. It illustrates E1.2.27–34:
- E1.2.27At stage’s end he halted by a stream,And pitched his royal camp beside its gleam.
- E1.2.28When old Zarvan arrived within the tent,All strangers from the private space were sent.
- E1.2.29The Shah spoke next of magic’s hidden skill,And how a glance at milk could work such ill.
- E1.2.30“This tale intrigues me,” said the Shah, and thenAsked how death came to Mahbud’s two young men.
- E1.2.31Zarvan stood trembling, overcome with dread; The Shah perceived his guilt at once and said:
- E1.2.32“Tell me the truth; conceal no part through lies,Nor cloak your crime beneath a false disguise.
- E1.2.33For knavery gives birth to evil deeds,And evil fellowship corrupts good seeds.”
- E1.2.34Zarvan confessed the secret from the start,But blamed the Jew for every wicked part.
