Mahwi Commands the Miller
From E10.10, The Plot against Yazdegard. It illustrates E10.10.4–15 (to E10.10.17):
- E10.10.4When Mahwi pondered, in his heart he knew:“This man is Yazdegard; the tale is true.”
- E10.10.5He bade the miller, “Hasten, take his head;Delay, and you this instant shall be dead.
- E10.10.6I will not leave one branch of all your race,But sweep your stock from every living place.”
- E10.10.7The chiefs and nobles heard Mahwi’s command,And wrath arose through all that gathered band.
- E10.10.8Their tongues were full of words, their eyes of tears,As horror moved among the mighty peers.
- E10.10.9A learned Mobad, Radwi, wise in mind,Whose every thought by wisdom was refined,
- E10.10.10Said, “Evil man, why has the Div made blindYour eyes, and left your judgment far behind?
- E10.10.11Kingship and prophecy, in concord bright,Are two gems set within one ring of light.
- E10.10.12To break the one casts soul and wisdom down,And tramples both beneath the broken crown.
- E10.10.13Reflect upon your words, and then forbear;Trust in the Maker; do not doubt His care.
- E10.10.14The first of all the harm will fall on you;You leave your sons a field of sorrow, too.
- E10.10.15Its fruit is colocynth; its leaves will bearThe blood your sons must harvest in despair.
