The Miller's Dagger
From E10.11, The Death of Yazdegard. It illustrates E10.11.13–18:
- E10.11.13With tearful eyes, his face grown pale and wan,The miller cursed the deed as he went on.
- E10.11.14“Almighty Judge, above all turning time,Wring Mahwi’s heart and soul for this dark crime,
- E10.11.15For this abhorred command,” he cried in shame,With mouth gone dry and tear-stained cheeks he came.
- E10.11.16He reached the Shah and cautiously drew near,As one who whispers secrets in the ear.
- E10.11.17Then with a dirk he struck his royal side; The Shah cried “Ah!” and fell as life’s flame died.
- E10.11.18His head and crown fell heavily; the breadOf barley lay before the monarch, dead.
