Shobae Moghireh Sits in the Dust
From E10.3, Rostam and Sa’ad Exchange Letters. It illustrates E10.3.63–74 (to E10.3.78):
- E10.3.63Then Shobae Moghireh said, “Let me be sentTo Rostam.” On that embassy he went.
- E10.3.64An Iranian noble came along the way,And to the Pahlevan had this to say:
- E10.3.65“An aged envoy, weak of frame, is here,Without a horse or proper battle gear.
- E10.3.66About his neck there hangs a slender blade; The tears within his shirt are plain displayed.”
- E10.3.67When Rostam heard, he had a rich tent made; Its walls were hung with costly silk brocade.
- E10.3.68They spread a Chinese carpet shot with gold;Like ants and locusts swarmed the soldiers bold.
- E10.3.69A golden seat was set above the throng; The army’s Pahlevan sat, waiting long.
- E10.3.70Then sixty men of Iran held their place,Battlefield lions, men of iron grace,
- E10.3.71In gold boots, violet robes with gold worked through,With torques and earrings flashing bright to view.
- E10.3.72The royal tent was dressed in bright array; Then Shobae Moghireh came along the way.
- E10.3.73He would not tread upon the cloth outspread,But took the humble path of dust instead.
- E10.3.74His scimitar he used just like a cane,Nor looked at lord or captain of the train.
