Thirst on the Field of Kadisiya
From E10.4, Rostam Battles Sa’ad and Is Slain. It illustrates E10.4.6–13:
- E10.4.6The armies met, feet planted in the ground; Each held its place amid the battle’s sound.
- E10.4.7Bright spearheads flashed through dust that veiled their sight,Like fiery stars that burn across the night.
- E10.4.8The spears struck helms and failed beneath the strain;Three days the armies battled on the plain.
- E10.4.9Then water grew scarce in the long-drawn fray;Their heavy armor on the warriors lay.
- E10.4.10With burdened souls, the fighters lost their might;Thirst stopped both men and horses in the fight.
- E10.4.11Rostam’s lips dried like dust upon the plain,His tongue was split with thirst and bitter pain.
- E10.4.12Both men and horses fed on moistened clay,So hard the battle pressed them on that day.
- E10.4.13Then Rostam looked across the field ahead,And saw the leaders of his army dead.
